Meditation for Stress Management & Healing
with Ann Porto. PsyD
Meets once per month. More dates to follow.
Sunday, March 21 1-2:3, April TBA
$20 per session / Open to all.
Mindfulness is a method of staying present in the moment and develops calmness and clarity and consequently improves coping skills. Inspired by the techniques of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and psychologist Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. Dr. Porto will draw from the mindfulness approach to teach how to tame the "monkey mind" to reduce stress and enhance self-healing and self-empowerment.
People often rely on sedatives or antianxiety medications, antidepressants
to reduce stress-related problems. This can be helpful to many, but often the side effects can be difficult to tolerate and even lead to a sense of disempowerment. By learning how to use mindfulness, metacognitive, and relaxation-based strategies, with practice, one can eventually overcome these negative and exhausting patterns and return the mind to its natural state of clarity and calmness.
You will:
• Learn how to indentify your sources of internal and external stress. Increase awareness of your responses to stress.
• Identify your contributing stress factors such as: irrational thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and assumptions.
• Learn strategies to help you challenge the sources and
intervene and counter the stress.
• Experience a soothing guided-meditation, progressing relaxation, and pranayama exercises to relax and nourish your mind and body.
Please wear loose fitting clothing. If possible, try NOT to drink
caffeinated beverages and/or eat a heavy meal prior to class.
Please do not wear perfume or cologne. Blankets and mats are
available, but you are encouraged to bring your own.
